Gary Burden's design of the Neil Young Archives, Volume 1 nominated
2009 | December 9 | garyburdenforrtwerk.com

MALIBU, Calif., Dec. 9 /PRNewswire/ -- Gary Burden's design of the Neil Young Archives, Volume 1 has been nominated for a 52nd Annual Grammy Award in the Best Boxed or Special Limited Edition Package category.

Lead art director and designer Gary Burden, R. Twerk & Co., says he had "no idea 'the archives' were entered into the awards, so it was a huge surprise when we received a phone call and learned we were nominated. This is just so cool and I am really happy for Neil, too." This is Burden's fourth Grammy nomination for design. Burden, representing his company R. Twerk & Co., has received three other Grammy nominations for 'Best Package of the Year.'

Gary Burden: "Neil and I first started talking about an unabridged box set of his life and music in 1989. But, as we started collecting materials we realized that we would have to break his project down into periods. There was just too much -- too much music, too much history. And this archive began to take on a life of it's own. With each year that passed, there was that much more that we found, that much more new stuff to include, that much more that could be done from a technology standpoint."

Stephen Stills Gets Prolific
2009 | November 27 | blogs.wsj.com

Stephen Stills is opening his archives. In 2007, he released “Just Roll Tape: April 26, 1968,” a collection of demos he recorded in one night that included compositions that turned up on the Crosby, Stills, Nash debut, his solo disks and other albums. This September, rare tracks he cut in the early ‘70s with his band Manassas appeared on “Manassas – Pieces.” and now there’s “Live at Shepherd’s Bush,” culled from a 2008 show in which he performed 14 songs including several he wrote for Buffalo Springfield. Up next, a U.S. tour beginning in February.

The Wall Street Journal: Why are you releasing so much material now?

Stills: "I was working on a boxed set, but the recession being what it is, I thought I’d put out a few things, like the Manassas album, and not ask people to buy a 10-CD set. I have enough to material to do that".

Crosby and Nash perform Joel Rafael's "This Is My Country" in Showtime documentary in November
2009 | October 29 | musictoday.com

Director Barry Levinson's Poliwood documentary visits the 2008 Democratic and Republican national conventions to examine the role that celebrities sometimes play in national politics and the often-negative way their involvement and interest is viewed by the public. Included are conversations with Sting, Matthew Modine, Josh Lucas, Anne Hathaway, Rachael Leigh Cook, Susan Sarandon, Spike Lee, Ellen Burstyn, Richard Schiff, Tucker Carlson and Tim Daly.

Joel Rafael's song, "This Is My Country," is featured in the film. The song was performed by Graham Nash and David Crosby in Denver during the Democratic Convention last fall, and was filmed by Levinson for the movie. Crosby and Nash performed "This Is My Country" on their 2008 fall tour, and invited Rafael to perform it with them at last year's Seva Benefit at the Paramount Theater in Oakland, CA. They also performed the song on much of the CSN tour earlier in the summer of 2008, and at a number of Obama rallies.

Poliwood makes its television debut on Showtime on Monday, November 2nd, with additional airings through the month. Visit the Showtime site for the airing schedule.

Stars align for Rock and Roll Hall of Fame's 25th anniversary concerts
2009 | October 25 | cleveland.com

As far as star-studded concerts go, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame's back-to-back 25th anniversary shows this week at Madison Square Garden in New York promise to outshine most.
"We're the opening act," said Graham Nash.

For his part, Nash is as excited about catching the other performers as he is about CSN's performance. "It's safe to assume that we won't be splitting after our set," he said by phone last week from his home on the Hawaiian island of Kauai. CSN was enshrined in the Rock Hall in 1997. Nash's previous band, the Hollies, have been nominated for induction next year.

"We'll probably open with 'Woodstock,' which we only did once on our last tour," Nash said. "CSN will start rocking, then we'll invited Bonnie out. We'll probably do 'Love Has No Pride' or 'Angel from Montgomery.' We'll bring Jackson out and do 'The Pretender.' We'll bring James out and do 'Mexico.' Then everybody will do 'Love the One You're With.' "

Details are subject to change, Nash added, although this much he knows: "It's going to be fun!"

Bridge benefit: There 'comes a time' for Neil Young
2009 | October 24 | latimesblogs.latimes.com

Neil Young just kicked off the 23rd Bridge School Benefit this weekend in Mountain View, just north of San Jose.

After Young's wife, Pegi, introduced the Bridge School students, including their son, Ben, Neil Young offered the title number from his 1978 album "Comes a Time." He was joined by three members of the Dennis Alley Wisdom Dancers, a Native American troupe that provided a brief cleansing ceremony to set a spiritual tone for the evening.

On a balmy night with the sun setting behind the hill at the Shoreline Amphitheatre, Young played acoustic guitar and harmonica for the event that traditionally runs 100% unplugged.

This year's lineup also includes No Doubt, Coldplay's Chris Martin, Sheryl Crow, Jimmy Buffett, Adam Sandler, Fleet Foxes, Monsters of Folk and Wolfmother.

It was the start of what figures to be six hours of music for what's become one of the pop music community's most respected benefits. Proceeds from the two-day event benefit the Bay Area school for special needs children.

Stephen Stills mining archives "in pieces" and new album
2009 | October 24 | reuters.com

DETROIT (Billboard) – For rock guitarist and singer-songwriter Stephen Stills, this fall's pair of archival releases are part of a master plan that will lead to a full-scale boxed set of potentially mammoth proportions.

"I want to break up the periods of my career and not make one of those big humongous things that nobody can afford," Stills told Billboard.com.

In September he released "Pieces," a collection of outtakes from his short-lived band Manassas, and Tuesday (October 27) he'll put out "Live at Shepherd's Bush," a CD/DVD set from his 2008 solo tour.
"Part of this is creative, and part of it is business sense and sheer economics, understanding my market and how difficult the business is and avoiding the temptation to be grandiose about it," Stills said. "Let's just do it in pieces, and then we'll put the whole thing together and put it on Blu-ray and that can be the big deal."

New music is in the offing as well. Stills continues to work with David Crosby, Graham Nash and producer Rick Rubin on a covers album; during concerts this year the trio has performed the Rolling Stones' "Ruby Tuesday," James Taylor's "Close Your Eyes," the Allman Brothers Band's "Midnight Rider," Bob Dylan's "Girl From the North Country" and the Grateful Dead's "Uncle John's Band."CSN has no deadline for finishing the album," Stills said.

Stills said he plans to write another album, a follow-up to 2005's "Man Alive!"

"I'm finally feeling some songs and some things to say," he said.

Songs For Beginners on vinyl
2009 | October 23 | rhino.com and barnesandnoble.com

This is really just for the audiophiles, but "Songs for Beginners" will be re-released on vinyl 180g on October 25 in the US.

"Songs for Beginners" is Graham Nash's solo debut apart from Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young. Released in 1971, it is a collection of songs that reflect change, transition, and starting over. The set was recorded in both Los Angeles and San Francisco, in the immediate aftermath of Nash's traumatic breakup with Joni Mitchell. The album is bookended by two of Nash's best-known tunes, the anthemic "Military Madness" that remains timeless in the 21st century, and "Chicago," that doesn't.

"Songs for Beginners" is one of those albums that reflects the times. Peace, love and introspection are what Graham Nash sings about, only the way that Graham can deliver. Somehow this release doesn't sound dated. The music and lyrics are just as appripo today as they were back then.

The Hollies nominees for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame
2009 | September 23 | billboard.com

KISS, the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Genesis, the Hollies, LL Cool J and Jimmy Cliff are first-time nominees among a dozen finalists for induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, according to a list released this morning by the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Foundation.

Hollies co-founder Graham Nash is already in the Hall of Fame with Crosby, Stills & Nash (1997) but said he was "very thrilled" to hear about the Hollies nomination. "There's a long way form here to actually being inducted," noted Nash, who was with the group from 1962-68. "I truly believe the Hollies deserve to be inducted. They were a large part of the early history of what we know as rock 'n' roll. I would be particularly thrilled For Allan Clarke. That's where my heart goes. I'm already in there, but it would be a thrill for me to see it happen for the Hollies."

Behind “Neil Young Trunk Show”: Director Demme on Capturing a Legend in New Film
2009 | September 20 | rollingstone.com

Neil Young Trunk Show, the second in Jonathan Demme’s planned film trilogy on the legendary rocker, is an unconscious, raw, in-the-moment concert movie that respects the immediacy of creativity and the creator. Partway through the follow-up to the 2006 doc Heart of Gold, Young launches into “No Hidden Path” and 20 blistering minutes later he ends. The “scene” draws you in as much as any high-speed car chase in an action thriller. “It’s gotta be the longest song ever in a movie. It’s gotta be,” says Demme, in a sit-down interview with Rolling Stone this week during the Toronto International Film Festival, where Trunk Show screened for free outdoors at Yonge-Dundas Square.

I always tell people, absolutely and sincerely, if you’re not a Neil Young fan, don’t waste your time,” Demme adds. “Second of all, if you don’t love electric guitar, don’t go. Because of ‘No Hidden Path,’ you’ve got to be there for electric guitar. It’s got to speak to you in order to get what that’s all about.”

A Warm Fuzzy Feeling at the Local Coffee House
2009 | September 19 | 4waysite.com

On Saturday night, September 5, a packed house of fortunate citizens from Findlay, Ohio, were treated to a solo acoustic show at the Coffee Amici by former CSNY and Manassas band member Calvin "Fuzzy" Samuel. The bowler hat and hard driving bass of Calvin's earlier years have been replaced by a cap from his native Antigua and a bouzouki, an eight-stringed instrument which he plays like no other person on the planet.

Eight years of practicing from Copenhagen to New York's Central Park have enabled him to master the long necked, mandolin-like instrument. Moving between his own material and cover tunes, Calvin covered classic rock, blues, reggae, African folk and Calypso. A stripped down version of Stephen Still's "Love the One You're With" was icing on the cake for the fan who drove in five hours from Chicago just to see the show. When's the last time you heard the intro of "Stairway to Heaven" segueing into "I Shot the Sheriff"? But to this stunned attendee's ears and eyes, it was the blues playing that came off as unworldly. If you closed your eyes you were transported back in time to a juke joint in Detroit where a young John Lee Hooker stamped his foot to the beat while straining every last ounce of gut bucket blues out of his soulful guitar and trembling voice. Yes, Calvin's show was THAT good. Intrigued?

Calvin has put out three CDs in recent years: This Train Still Runs, Love Don't Taste Like Chicken and Organic Blues. He appears on the upcoming release of Manassas, Pieces. CSN have a cover record started, but one has to wonder how a bouzouki could add to the mix. Look forward to an exclusive interview with Calvin in the near future on 4 WaySite.com.

Check him out and pass the hat!

In addition to the above-mentioned musicians, day one will include performances by Fleet Foxes, Wolfmother and Gavin Rossdale. Buffett performs only on day one, and comedian Sandler performs only on day two.

McLachlan, Crow bookend Young's soul with spirited sets
2009 | September 14 | theglobeandmail.com

It's hard to imagine a triple-bill featuring Neil Young, Sheryl Crow and Sarah McLachlan being anything less than spectacular. Factor in the idyllic venue – West Vancouver's waterfront Ambleside Park on a gorgeous late summer day – and we're talking concert of a lifetime, right?

Right.

Billed as Summer Sessions at Ambleside, the all-day affair on Saturday was a fundraiser for the Sarah McLachlan Foundation, which raises money for music programs at inner-city schools. The West Vancouver resident (she said she lives 10 blocks from the park) told the audience that she was bullied at school, but that music was “a constant friend for me.”

McLachlan joined Crow on stage for Strong Enough – a performance that gave Crow “goose bumps,” she said afterward.

Young brought a very different energy to the show. Surrounded by a circle of guitars, he played a quiet set that did not include any of his giant hits. As disappointed as some fans may have been not to hear "Sugar Mountain" or "Heart of Gold," Young sounded terrific on songs like "Long May You Run" and "Pocahontas." That voice. That voice! It was in top form.

Yet Young, for his many talents, is more poet than performer. There wasn't a lot of showmanship involved: While he did seem to be enjoying himself, one got the feeling he'd give the same sort of performance if he were playing in his garage to an audience of none.

McLachlan does. “So if we do this again, would you come back?” she asked the crowd.

You bet.

What concert? Neil Young pleads ignorance
2009 | September 11 | thestar.com

Veteran rocker sends his regrets to Toronto, but says a third film with Demme could happen

They say rock 'n' roll never forgets, but someone in charge of Neil Young's itinerary evidently did.

Young tells the Star he never intended to visit hometown Toronto to promote his new concert movie, The Neil Young Trunk Show, in a free public event Monday at Yonge-Dundas Square.

The official TIFF schedule has Young as a confirmed attendee, along with director Jonathan Demme.

"This is the first time I ever heard I was supposed to be there," Young says from his California ranch home near San Rafael. "I didn't know I was a scheduled event."

Neil Young Cancels Appearance at TIFF
2009 | September 10 | martiniboys.com

In a Toronto International Film Festival full of glitz and glamour, the announced appearance of Neil Young, a Canadian rock and roll legend who's more used to the ranch than the red carpet, was a welcome surprise. The fact that his appearance would be free was icing on the cake. But apparently it was too good to be true. With no prior warning and, as of now, no reason given, Neil Young has pulled out of his scheduled appearance.

Young's appearance was part of a public unveiling and screening of Jonathan Demme's new concert film, Neil Young Trunk Show. Organizers adeptly played the hype game promising that the rock icon would bring his guitar, and maybe he would play it. The prospect of a free Neil Young concert at Yonge and Dundas Square had more than a few heads exploding (including my own), especially
since his last few Toronto performances sold out within minutes.

But, as they say in show business, the show must go on, and the September 14 screening of Neil Young Trunk Show will go on as scheduled, with Jonathan Demme himself handling MC duties. He doesn't have the same awe factor, but Demme is still a big presence, having directed such renowned films as Silence of the Lambs, Philadelphia and Rachel Getting Married, which was a big hit at last
year's TIFF.

While there is no official word as to why Neil Young cancelled, festival spokespeople have promised that they are searching for a "spectacular" performer to take his place. With only four days left before the event, I doubt Bob Dylan or Leonard Cohen are available....

New Release, old music from Stills and Hendrix together
2009 | August 26 | examiner.com

Stephen Stills didn’t need to take guitar lessons from anyone but he did. His teacher was considered by many to be the greatest guitar player ever, Jimi Hendrix. It was right after he bought a house from Ringo Starr and settled in the UK. Stills and Hendrix played together off and on for three months, some of their sessions were recorded and Stills is trying to work out a deal now with John McDermott who oversees the music of Jimi Hendrix.

Manassas archival release "Pieces"
2009 | August 16 | billboard.com

As he continues to work on his own box set retrospective, Stephen Stills has mined his distant and recent pasts for a pair of fall archival releases.

After recording his second solo album, Stills formed Manassas in 1971 with a talented group of musicians that included Chris Hillman, a former member of the Byrds and Flying Burrito Brothers. Manassas released two albums, 1972's eponymous double-album debut and the 1973 follow-up, Down The Road. MANASSAS - PIECES features alternate versions of two songs from Down The Road: 'Do You Remember The Americans' and 'Lies' (featuring guitarist Joe Walsh). The collection also includes the legendary group's unreleased performances of 'Sugar Babe' and 'Word Game,' a pair of songs Stills recorded in 1971 for his second solo album. The remaining tracks include 'Like A Fox,' a song recorded with blues guitarist Bonnie Raitt on background vocals and the Latin-tinged 'Tan Sola Y Triste' (Spanish for 'So Alone and Sad').

Woodstock exhibit at Rock Hall
2009 | July 3 | news-herald.com

As Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum Curatorial Director Howard Kramer found out, some exhibits require quite a bit of due diligence, research and discovery, while others simply find you. It was the latter situation with the Cleveland institution’s new exhibit, which opens today.

Among Lang's items are his leather vest from the festival, performance contracts from Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young, a letter from The Beatles' Apple Records about the groups they were offering for Woodstock such as Plastic Ono Band, Billy Preston and James Taylor and more.

Paul McCartney Joins Neil Young at London’s Hyde Park
2009 | June 30 | gibson.com

Neil Young fans got an unexpected treat at London’s Hyde Park on Saturday (June 27), when Paul McCartney joined Young on-stage during an explosive rendition of the Beatles’ “A Day in the Life.”

Bounding on-stage as Young reached the song’s middle section, McCartney sang his famous verse and then dueted with Young for a couple of minutes before exiting as Young put Old Black through its paces during the track’s famous outro. McCartney then rejoined Young for a short coda played on a vibraphone.

Check out the performance below.

Stills thanked women and politicians for induction into the Songwriters Hall of Fame
2009 | June 22 | upi.com

Stephen Stills thanked women and politicians for Crosby, Stills and Nash's induction into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in New York.

Stills was on hand at the hall of fame's 40th induction ceremony along with bandmates David Crosby and Graham Nash to receive the music industry honor, Rolling Stone magazine reported online Friday.

"I have to thank all the great women who dumped me and all the dumb politicians that did things that (inspired me) to write songs," Stills said at Thursday's ceremony.

Rockers Jon Bon Jovi and Richie Sambora were also on hand to be inducted for their work together in the group Bon Jovi.

"If you write one song that comes across decades, you're lucky. If you write a body of them and you're recognized in the Songwriters Hall of Fame, it's prestigious," Jovi said prior to be honored.

Another CSN demo

I just think it’s fascinating for people to hear. I had taken care of the tapes the last 40 years in terms of climate control and heat control, etc., the tapes sound fantastic".

Neil Young: Don’t Be Denied premiering nationally in the US on PBS this June
2009 | May 31 | pbs.org

A resolutely private artist who seldom looks back, Neil Young has never before unfolded his career on camera. With unprecedented access to one of the world’s renowned music legends, American Masters presents Neil Young: Don’t Be Denied on PBS as early as June 1, 2009 (check local listings). The film explores how Young’s unbending dedication to the muse has created an awe-inspiring body of work and bruised a few egos along the way.

Told in Young’s own words, the film weaves hours of exclusive interview, shot in New York and California, with previously unseen performance footage from the star’s own extensive collection. The documentary also features long-time collaborators Stephen Stills, Graham Nash, David Crosby, Nils Lofgren and James Taylor.

“There’s no denying Neil Young as music’s most uncompromising rock royalty,” says Susan Lacy, creator and executive producer of American Masters, a six-time winner of the Emmy Award for Outstanding Primetime Non-Fiction Series. “He’s an irreverent poet with a rock and roll heart. His music embodies the arc of American experience, challenges authoritative views, defies industry pigeon-holing and continues to have an impact on musicians and fans worldwide.”

Charting Young’s musical journey from his suburban Canadian childhood to his Hollywood superstardom, an intimate camera captures the critical benchmarks and personal pitfalls of the godfather of grunge. In the late 60s, he achieved early acclaim with the short-lived yet influential psychedelic garage band, Buffalo Springfield, which launched his solo career. During this creative streak, he founded Crazy Horse and collaborated with Crosby, Stills and Nash. Adding fuel to his already rising success, these bands also shot to meteoric fame. The intensity of mega-stardom, mixed with frequent bouts of artistic differences, led to Young’s departure from both groups. He later explained his anti-star status, “I didn’t spend 10 years in the 60s and 70s creating something so I could be a prisoner of it … You know if you’re trying to stay in the favor of the public, you’re a loser – you’ll never get there.”

In the 70s, Young wrote introspective songs on multi-platinum hallmark albums, After the Gold Rush (1970) and Harvest (1972). He became an emotional chronicler on the harrowing On the Beach (1974). With his signature falsetto and idiosyncratic guitar riffs, the crude collection of tracks reflected a bleak mood stemming from the Manson massacres and Nixon’s resignation during that decade. Following the drug casualties of his two confidants (Crazy Horse’s Danny Whitten and roadie Bruce Berry), he gave the music’s answer to cinema vérité: Tonight’s the Night (1975), a spine-chilling wake for his dead friends. By the end of the 70s, he reached his peak of popularity with critics and fans favorite, Rust Never Sleeps (1979).

In the 80s, the rock veteran entered an experimental phase with hits and misses. Embracing the new waves of punk and electronica, Young teamed up with Devo on his art-house epic Human Highway (1982), a comedy film. Not one to stay static, he also released records exploring various genres including This Note’s for You (1988), a concept album criticizing the commercialism of the music industry. In the 90s, Young reunited with Crazy Horse and released the acclaimed album Ragged Glory (1990). Crazy Horse served as back-up band on Young’s solo release throughout the 90s. In 1995, Neil Young was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. More recently, Young promoted his Grammy-nominated, Iraq war protest album, Living with War (2006) on a Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young’s “Freedom of Speech” tour. The film ends with Young still refusing to be denied, playing an anti-Bush anthem to a Republican audience in the South.

Neil Young: Don’t Be Denied is a production of the BBC. Ben Whalley is producer and director. Mark Cooper is the producer for the BBC. Susan Lacy is the creator and executive producer of American Masters.

The Double Life of Neil Young's Road Manager
2009 | May 29 | independent.co.uk

By day, Eric Johnson is Neil Young's faithful road manager, battling with amps and backstage riders. By night, he is Neil Young's on-stage artist. If you've seen Young play live in the past two years, then you'll have seen Johnson too, wielding a paintbrush as he creates art inspired by the music. It could be a horse's head with "Everybody Knows this is Nowhere" scrawled over it, a sunset entitled "Spirit Road", a cityscape terrorised by a Cyclops or maybe just a yellow splash ("Heart of Gold") or a giant 'N'.

Johnson, 44, has been Young's road manager for 15 years and began painting for the Chrome Dreams II tour in 2007. He produces up to 8 works per concert, using bold colours and brushes heavily loaded with acrylic as the paint dries very quickly under the lights. When he runs out of canvases on tour, the stage carpenters chop lumps of wood off the set for him to use. "I just play with paint like it's an instrument", says Johnson, whose favourite song to work to is the elegaic "Change your mind". "It's hard not to be inspired by Neil Young playing right next to you."

Born in Seattle, Johnson studied Graphic Arts and ran his student radio station where he met Soundgarden, later becoming their roadie. It was while he was working for Pearl Jam in 1994 that he met Young when the rock band supported him on tour. Young poached him for his own staff and Johnson began designing T-shirts on the side. "When you work with Neil, you never do just one thing", says Johnson who has previously danced as the devil on stage for Young's Greendale show. "He's an artist through and through."

Johnson intends to catalogue and sell the 400 or so paintings he has amassed so far after this year's tour. First and foremost, though, he is a road manager. "That never stops. If you see me disappear from the stage at any point, I'm probably off sorting something out."

Toronto-area Guitarists Invited to Rally for World Record
2009 | May 28 | canada.com

A Canadian festival group is hoping that Neil Young's Helpless won't live up to its name - the tune will be used next month in an attempt to break a Guinness World Record.

Chosen as the ``Great Canadian Tune'' in an online poll, Luminato - an annual Toronto arts festival - is encouraging guitarists to gather in Yonge- Dundas Square, in the city's downtown, on June 6 to perform the iconic song in unison. The goal is to break the world record for the world's largest guitar ensemble.

Young's Helpless was chosen during a one-month online voting contest out of a group of 10 Canadian guitar classics, beating out other strum-worthy hits, including Bachman-Turner Overdrive's Taking Care of Business and The Tragically Hip's Courage. Helpless received 3,701 votes out of a total 19,217.

The current Guinness World Record for guitar ensemble is held by Leinfelden- Echterdingen, in Germany, which, in 2007, saw 1,802 guitarists assemble to perform Deep Purple's Smoke on the Water.

Participants should arrive at 2 p.m. on June 6 to register their six- or 12- string guitar - no banjos, basses, ukuleles or air guitars are permitted. Helpless will be performed at 4 p.m.

The song's tablature is available on Luminato's website, and the festival cautions participants must be able to perform the selected tune proficiently.

Young originally recorded Helpless with Crazy Horse in 1969, and then again a year later with Crosby, Stills & Nash.

Luminato runs from June 5 to June 14 at a number of locations across Toronto.

Woodstock: 3 Days of Peace & Music Director's Cut (with Amazon Exclusive Bonus Disc)
2009 | May 27 | thehdroom.com

The 40th anniversary of Woodstock has given Warner Home Video incentive to revisit the original Oscar-winning documentary Woodstock: 3 Days of Peace and Music film and release it for the first time on Blu-ray Disc (with a simultaneous DVD bow) in an all-new director's cut presentation adding approximately 44 additional minutes to the film. Though arguably not the penultimate Woodstock experience it is, to date, the most comprehensive and technically accurate representation of the festival ever made available on home video.

All the excitement and authenticity of original performances from acts like Joe Cocker; the Who; Crosby Stills, Nash and Young; Alvin Lee and Ten Years After; Janis Joplin; Jefferson Airplane; Jimi Hendrix; Lesley West and Mountain; Joan Baez; and Ritchie Havens, to name some of the artists who performed, continues to pack the punch and deliver the message they originally did.

Woodstock: 3 Days of Peace and Music has been remastered and scanned at 2K, retaining the extensive segments of split-screen footage that makes the documentary so unique while presenting the standard segments in letterboxed 2.20:1. The result on Blu-ray Disc in 1080p via a VC-1 encode blows the previously released DVD edition out of the water and is fantastic considering the often rainy and dark shooting conditions the film crew experienced over three days. Colors are now much stronger, detail sharper and print damage minimized as to not detract from the film. The image is still slightly desaturated and soft compared to modern films but will please nonetheless.

Tour preps Crosby, Stills & Nash for Rubin-produced album
2009 | May 20 | livedaily.com

Crosby, Stills & Nash are preparing to road test a series of cover songs that they plan to record for a forthcoming album with producer Rick Rubin.

According to Graham Nash, the collaboration came about after Columbia Records A&R executive Jay Landers heard a Crosby, Stills & Nash song on the radio and inquired about who was recording them. The answer: No one. So Landers went to Columbia Records Chairman Steve Barnett, who in turn contacted Rubin.

"Steve Barnett said, 'If Crosby, Stills & Nash theoretically were available to record, what do you think?' [Rubin replied] 'I know exactly how to do it. I have the people in place. I know where I want to record it in Laurel Canyon. I want to do this.' That's how it started," Nash told LiveDaily this week.

"The amazing thing is this: one of the reasons why Crosby, Stills & Nash has not made 50 records is me and my yearning for it all to be as democratic as possible. We have to wait for David [Crosby] to write. David writes at a much slower rate than me and Stephen [Stills] do. So we'd have to wait until David had four to five songs that we love, so we could take three of them and put three of Stephen's, three of mine and a couple of others and make a record."

But this time, things are different, said Nash.

"This time, they don't want Crosby, Stills & Nash songs," Nash said. "They want the Crosby Stills & Nash vocal sound on songs that we love, that we'd wish we'd written, that we'd wish we recorded.

"It's been a very interesting time choosing. I went to my friend Joel Bernstein's house in Oakland. Joel is our archivist. He knows more about Neil Young, Joni Mitchell and Crosby, Stills & Nash than anybody in the world. I said, 'Here's what we need to do. I need 50 songs that (a) have a great melody (b) say something and (c) can be Crosby Stills and Nashed to death. That's what we need to search for.'"

Bernstein and Nash found 50 songs and took them to Stills and Crosby. They threw out 15 and took 35 to Rubin, who tossed another 15.

"We ended up with 15 to 20 songs that we all loved," Nash said. "We're going to try to do six or seven of them per night and road test them--get them ready to be recorded by playing them live night after night."

Crosby, Stills & Nash will be on tour all summer, and will issue "Demos," a collection of previously unreleased demos, June 12.

Crosby, Stills & Nash DEMOS - Pre-Order Now. Available June 2nd!

This 12 song compilation of previously unreleased demos from 1968 to 1971 offers a behind-the-scenes glimpse at the earliest days of one of rock's most legendary partnerships. This compilation of previously unreleased material takes an unprecedented look at the earliest days of their collaboration with 12 demos from 1968 to 1971-destined to be classic songs.

While a number of demos feature members performing solo (and one finds them joined by Neil Young), the set opens with the trio harmonizing on 'Marrakesh Express', recorded four months before their self-titled debut LP was released in 1969.

Canadian Songbook: A Tribute to Neil Young’s Live at Massey Hall
2009 | May 19 | roythomsonhall.com

On January 19, 1971, Canada’s legendary singer-songwriter Neil Young performed solo at Massey Hall. Audiences there heard for the first time many of the iconic songs that would later appear on his albums, including his best-selling LP Harvest – yet the live concert recording itself wasn’t released until 2007.

On June 10, 2009, as part of the Luminato Festival, a stellar group of Canadian musicians, led by Juno Award winning music director Kevin Breit, will recreate that landmark concert, performing their own distinctive arrangements of the album’s eighteen classic songs.

The concert features: Holly Cole, Jason Collett, Colin James, Cowboy Junkies, Bill Frisell Trio, Stevie Jackson (Belle and Sebastian), Issa (formerly Jane Siberry), Colin Linden, Harry Manx, Danny Michel, Steven Page, Roxanne Potvin, Carole Pope.

Review of Neil Young, Archives Vol.1
2009 | May 17 | guardian.co.uk

"I don't know that I have much to hide," Neil Young notes in a 1971 home movie included on Archives Vol. 1. "Other than being a rich hippie ... " Young certainly doesn't hide much in this giant monument to himself, the first of several pyramids this rock pharaoh is assembling to enshrine his legacy.

Many diehard fans had begun to wonder if the Archives would ever be a reality, so long have they been promised and postponed. Now the first instalment is here, is disappointment inevitable? Actually, no. This exhaustive project is the most impressive retro-fest of recordings, photographs, video footage and digiti sed memorabilia ever assembled. Diehard Neil Nuts could lose several weeks of their lives in the multi layered, omninavigational experience it offers. (This is true of both the 10-disc DVD and Blu-Ray versions: investing in the eight-CD set is, frankly, pointless.)

Neither Dylan, nor the Beatles nor the Stones, would have devoted the thousands of man-hours to ensuring their immortality that Neil (with the aid of in-house curators ) has done here. So why is he, in the hackneyed L'Oreal phrase, worth it? For the simple reason that his talent evolved into something so different from – and so superior to – the soulbearing orthodoxies of his peers. To be sure, 1970s Neil was a canyon navel-gazer. But he was also a poet of otherworldly feeling: 20% left-brain calculation, 80% right-brain instinct and raging imagination.

Among other things, Archives Vol. 1 charts and documents the transition from the fussy complexity of 1968's Neil Young to the liberating rawness of 1969's Everybody Knows This is Nowhere. It's when Neil keeps matters simple that he evokes and produces the most complex emotions: the fusion of grunginess and ethereality – grit and lonesomeness – that's all but unique to him. The first of three "Topanga" discs, covering the spooky proto-Americana of 1970's After the Gold Rush, is where things get really interesting.

Anyone who already invested in the Fillmore East, Massey Hall and Canterbury House live albums may feel miffed by their inclusion here (though there is a new live disc from Toronto's Riverboat club recorded in early 1969). But the abundance of rarities more than compensates: long-venerated Harvest outtake "Bad Fog of Loneliness;" a solo "See the Sky About to Rain" from DC's Cellar Door in December 1970; the cajunish folk of "Dance, Dance, Dance" cut as a duet with Graham Nash in London in 1971. And so very much more.

Then there's video footage not even the fanatics will have seen: Neil sprawled on the grass outside his Broken Arrow ranch, clutching a Coors and rhapsodising about the "natural echo" in the hills around him; Neil with Jack Nitzsche in London, fretting about the orchestra on "A Man Needs a Maid." Plus you finally get the long-lambasted "Journey Through the Past" on DVD – a home movie made under the apparent influence of Zabriskie Point and Godard's Sympathy for the Devil but boasting some telling down-time footage. This a massive multimedia scrapbook that all but demands you sit and pay attention. Now, when did they say Volume 2 was out?

Crosby, Stills & Nash lengthen US road trip
2009 | May 15 | livedaily.com

Crosby, Stills & Nash have further filled out their summertime tour schedule, adding a second US leg to their impending world outing.

Since last check, the veteran rock trio--David Crosby, Stephen Stills and Graham Nash--has tacked on an additional 23 stateside stops, creating a two-part, 43-city run hitting amphitheaters and music halls from coast to coast through early fall. The four-month tour kicks off June 3 in St. Louis, the day after the group releases "Demos," a Rhino Records album featuring 12 previously unreleased tracks recorded between 1968 and 1971. The full schedule is shown below.

Following the mid-June conclusion of the North American trek's first leg, the Grammy-winning outfit will be inducted into the Songwriter's Hall of Fame June 18 in New York City. The honor comes just over a decade after their 1997 induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

The group will then head across the pond for a 9-date European leg before returning to the US for a second round of performances that gets underway July 25 in Portland, ME, and finishes up with a two-night finale in San Diego Sept. 28-29.

CSN first formed in 1968, with each member coming from another influential group: David Crosby from The Byrds, Stephen Stills from Buffalo Springfield and Graham Nash from The Hollies. The band's most recent collection of original material, "After the Storm," surfaced in 1994.

An up-to-date concert schedule for CSN (and NY) is available on 4WaySite.com

Most people have probably heard Jeff Pevar even if they've not heard of him; and they may not even realize it. A guitarist, composer, multi-instrumentalist, producer, arranger and vocalist, Pevar (a.k.a. “The Peev”) has recorded, performed and/or toured with some of the finest musicians in the music business, such as Ray Charles, James Taylor, Carly Simon, Rickie Lee Jones, Steely Dan's Donald Fagen, Phil Lesh, Marc Cohn and many others.

Perhaps most notably: through being Marc Cohn’s guitarist on a tour supporting Crosby, Stills & Nash, he came into contact with the CSN “family”, which is, of course, of particular interest to readers of 4 WaySite. Since that first introduction in 1992 he has worked with Crosby & Nash (first on tour and later in the studio for the 2004 CD “Crosby & Nash”), with Crosby and his son James Raymond (both live and in the studio) as CPR, with Graham Nash live in 2002 and with CSN during their 2004 & 2005 tours.

There is an exclusive interview with Jeff here.

Interview with Neil Young on Music Piracy, MP3 Hell and Finding Freaks on the Web
2009 | May 6 | readwriteweb.com

Here at the JavaOne conference in San Francisco Neil Young just announced that his whole life's work will be made available on in a dynamically updating collection delivered on Blu-ray disk. After his Keynote announcement I was fortunate enough to participate in a small group interview with a handful of other bloggers. Young offered interesting replies to questions about Trent Reznor and music piracy, about MP3 sound quality and about the way the web enables his extensive work on electric cars.

The short version is that Young fully expects his collection to be sent all over the web for free, he hates MP3s and he loves finding freaky scientists on the web and offering them profiles in his next movie.

Lyrics to David Gilmour's Version of "Chicago"
2009 | April 25 | neptunepinkfloyd.co.uk

David Gilmour's song, along with other undisclosed songs, will be released on a CD next month to raise awareness for Gary McKinnon who is fighting extradition to the USA. An extradition request has been filed by the US Government after McKinnon hacked into the US Military's computer network.

David Gilmour (Pink Floyd) and his manager Paul Loasby have helped to obtain copyright clearance from Graham Nash, to allow Janis Sharp's re-written lyrics to "Chicago":

So your brother's bound and gagged
And they've chained him to a chair
Won't you please come from Chicago just to sing
In a land that's known as freedom how can such a thing be fair
Won't you please come from Chicago for the help that you can bring

We can change the world, rearrange the world
It's dying - to get better

Politicians sit yourselves down, there's something for you here
Won't you please stand up in London for our Lives
Don't ask Jack to help you cause he'll turn the other ear
Won't you please stand up in London and join us side by side

We can change the world, rearrange the world
It's dying - if you believe in justice
Dying - and if you believe in freedom
Dying - Stand for Autistic Rights
Dying - and a world we can believe in, open up the door

Somehow people must be free, so help the day comes soon
Won't you please come from Chicago show your face
From the bottom of the ocean to the mountains of the moon
Won't you please stand up in London no one else can take your place

You can change the world rearrange the world
It's dying - if you believe in justice
Dying - and if you believe in freedom
Dying - Give Gary back his life
Dying - make a world we can believe in, open up the door

Omemee's Neil Young Museum Enters Second Year of Operation
2009 | April 18 | thepeterboroughexaminer.com

"Rock 'n' Roll will never die."

The words of Canadian music icon Neil Young, who spent a good time of his youth in Omemee, represent an attitude that rings true in the village's downtown at the Youngtown Rock and Roll Museum.

The museum is filled with hundreds of pieces of memorabilia that owner Trevor Hosier has amassed over the years from artists from the '50s, '60s and '70s.

Youngtown opened last May and Hosier said it was a successful first year, with more than 650 visitors.

"People came here from around the globe," he said, noting people visited from as far away as Europe.

"Fork In The Road" - the new album from Neil Young - on amazon.com now!
2009 | April 7 | 4waysite.com

"Fork In The Road," Neil Young's new album, has just arrived, so head out to amazon.com and pick up a copy.

"There's a bailout coming, but it's not for you," Neil Young laments in the title track from "Fork in the Road," a crackling travelogue that in some ways could be viewed as his version of Twitter. This in-the-moment dispatch from the mercurial rocker was clearly inspired by his LincVolt project, in which he's converting a gas-guzzling 1959 Lincoln Continental to run on electricity.

Much like Young's 2006 "Living With War" album, which he assembled in startlingly short order, "Fork in the Road" feels like the outcome of midnight-oil writing and recording sessions by a man on a mission. Among the titles: "Off the Road," "Hit the Road," "Get Behind the Wheel." You get the idea.

Pink Floyd frontman backs mckinnon musical protest
2009 | April 6 | theregister.co.uk

A small group of protesters held a successful musical protest against attempts to extradite UFO enthusiast turned hacker Gary McKinnon to the US on Thursday.

Janis Sharp, McKinnon's mum, organised the sing-in protest outside the US embassy on Thursday to coincide with President Barack Obama's visit to London for the G20 conference and UN World Autism Awareness Day.

These efforts gained a massive publicity boost when David Gilmour, legendary singer and guitarist with Pink Floyd, agreed to sing on the backing track of the song.

Sharp rewrote the lyrics (but not the tune) of Graham Nash's "Chicago" as a protest against long-running attempts to wrench her son over to the US to face trial and probable incarceration for hacking into US government and military systems. The protests also sought to highlight concerns with the lop-sided UK-US extradition treaty more generally.

Crosby, Stills & Nash dust off old demos
2009 | March 30 | reuters.com

DETROIT (Billboard) - Early recordings of a dozen Crosby, Stills & Nash tracks -- including favorites such as "Marrakesh Express," "Almost Cut My Hair," "Deja Vu," "Love the One You're With" and "Chicago" -- will be featured on an album of demos due in stores on June 2.

The release of the Rhino Records set, "Crosby, Stills & Nash Demos," coincides with the trio's June 18 induction into the Songwriters Hall of Fame and a brief summer tour of the United States and Europe.

"It's fascinating stuff," Graham Nash, who co-produced the set with Joel Bernstein, told Billboard.com. "On some of these songs you really hear us becoming a band, trying out different ideas in our songwriting and singing and harmonies. It really is a time capsule."

The "Demos" version of "Long Time Gone," for instance, features just Crosby and Stills during June of 1968, a few weeks before Nash joined the group. "Marrakesh Express," meanwhile, was recorded four months before CSN's first album came out in 1969. The set also includes: a Crosby solo demo of "Almost Cut My Hair;" a Stills solo take of "My Love is a Gentle Thing" form 1969; Neil Young joining Crosby and Nash on "Music is Love" for Crosby's 1971 solo debut album "If I Could Only Remember My Name;" and demos of three tracks for Nash's 1971 solo debut "Songs For Beginners" -- "Sleep Song," "Be Yourself" and "Chicago."

The full "Demos" track stack included: "Marrakesh Express," "Almost Cut My Hair," "You Don't Have To Cry," "Deja Vu," "Sleep Song," "My Love Is A Gentle Thing," "Be Yourself," "Music Is Love," "Singing Call," "Long Time Gone," "Chicago" and "Love The One You're With."

"Demos" is the latest result from a spate of vault trolling that's produced box sets for Crosby and Nash, a demos collection from Stills and expanded editions of "If I Could Only Remember My Name" and "Songs For Beginners." Stills is currently working on his box set, while CSN is recording an album of covers that's being supervised by Rick Rubin.

Neil Young's 'Archives' Set For June 2 Arrival
2009 | March 21 | billboard.com

Gary Graff, Austin, TX -- Rocker Neil Young's oft-delayed "Archives" collection will finally be released on June 2, Young's manager Elliot Roberts announced at South by Southwest in Austin, TX today (March 21).

Neil Young fans got a glimpse at several of the veteran rocker's upcoming projects on Saturday at the conference. The June 2 release date for the long awaited "Archives" collection was revealed during a panel discussion that included Roberts and Larry Johnson, director of Young's Shakey Films, who also played samples of material from the anthology.

The set will be available as a 10-disc Blu-Ray edition listing for $299, a 10-DVD box for $199 and a CD version for $99.

Later in the afternoon director Jonathan Demme unveiled his second Young concert film, "Neil Young's Trunk Show," at the Paramount Theatre. Demme told the crowd that the movie, filmed during two performances at Philadelphia's Tower Theater in December 2007, "is a home movie in a way. We did it all by ourselves."

The version of the in-progress film screened Saturday featured onstage and backstage footage, including performances of "Harvest," "Cinammon Girl," "Southern Man" and "Like a Hurricane," among others. Deme said that while 2006's "Heart of Gold" was "meticulously planned," "Trunk Show" was done more casually. Asked when he would complete his Neil Young "trilogy," Demme responded "I should only be so lucky."

Graham Nash interview
2009 | March 2 | illinoisentertainer.com

Crosby, Stills, and I were at my house in Hawaii for the past 10 days rehearsing a new record,” Graham Nash says from a New York hotel. Tentatively titled Laurel Canyon, it will be the first CSN effort composed entirely of cover versions. The concept came from their label, Columbia. “They want that vocal sound, which obviously is reminiscent of the ’60s, ” Nash explains, “on songs that we wish we had written. And so far it’s going very well.”

Plus, it circumvents a songwriting problem that has dogged the trio throughout its career.

“In an effort to keep this band as equal as possible for as long as possible, I always wait for four Crosby songs that we love, four of mine that we love, and four of Stephen’s that we love to make a balanced album,” Nash maintains. “But because David writes at a much slower pace than us, we have to wait and that’s why we haven’t done a lot of albums. The brilliance of the Columbia idea is that it takes that completely away.”

One downside of Laurel Canyon is that it will leave Nash little time to promote his own stuff. With the Reflections box set following closely on the heels of a remastered version of his 1970 debut, Songs For Beginners, the time seems ripe to embark on solo tour. But so far, he only has a single performance on his plate.

“I have to fit it in with me and David and Stephen making a record and plans to go on the road, because of course, this is our 40th year,” Nash says. His 27-year-old daughter suggested a gig near her home – the California town of Grass Valley, which has a thriving music scene.

“She wants me to do a show that consists of me walking out there with a band and playing Songs For Beginners right the way through, track by track,” he says, “and take an intermission and then do all of [second solo album] Wild Tales.”

Piece of rock 'n roll history for sale
2009 | February 28 | examiner.com

As we mentioned last year, David Crosby wants to sell his boat the Mayan.

It's a piece -- albeit an expensive piece at $1 million -- of Baby Boomer history to have the boat that Crosby says he sailed for 40 years and upon which he composed some of the music that reflected the attitudes, hopes and frustrations of the generation.

David Crosby: "After 40 years of sailing my Alden Schooner, and writing many of my best songs aboard her, I have reached that point when I must let her go."
(Quote attributed to Crosby in a for sale ad that appears in the current issue of Rolling Stone magazine.)

Comes a time to fight for farmers
By Neil Young
2009 | February 26 | boston.com

When Abraham Lincoln formed the US Department of Agriculture in 1862 he referred to it as the "People's Department" because it served the common interest of so many Americans. America's concerns about food and the economy were addressed and investments in cutting-edge research guaranteed the nation's food security.

More than 200 years later, we are in the midst of a historic financial crisis and part of the solution lies with the "People's Department." It's time for our newest federal leaders to recognize the unmatched ability of family farmers to strengthen local economies. We can all learn from the ingenuity and innovation that family farmers demonstrate time and time again in the face of challenge.

2009 Songwriters Hall Of Fame Inductees Announced
2009 | February 24 | songhall.org

New York, N.Y. – February 24, 2009 – This year, the Songwriters Hall of Fame (SHOF) celebrates 40 years of recognizing the work and lives of enduring composers and lyricists who create popular music around the world. Hal David, SHOF Chairman/CEO, announced today the 2009 Songwriters Hall of Fame Awards inductees will be Jon Bon Jovi and Richie Sambora; Felix Cavalieri and Eddie Brigati (The Young Rascals ); Roger Cook and Roger Greenaway; Crosby, Stills & Nash; Galt MacDermot, James Rado and Gerome Ragni (deceased); and Stephen Schwartz. The induction and awards dinner is scheduled for Thursday, June 18 at the Marriott Marquis Hotel in New York City. Special award honorees will be announced at a later date.

“The Songwriters Hall of Fame has much to celebrate every year, but this one is especially significant,” commented Chairman/CEO and acclaimed lyricist Hal David. “I can think of no better way to mark our 40th anniversary than by inducting this group of eminent songwriters whose extraordinary accomplishments have made an indelible impression on the world’s musical culture.”

Crosby, Stills & Nash:
The Byrds’ David Crosby, Buffalo Springfield’s Stephen Stills and the Hollies’ Graham Nash joined forces as rock’s most important vocal “supergroup” in 1968. One of the most potent, enduring, original and socially conscious songwriting teams of our time, Crosby, Stills & Nash (CSN) captivated the world with their inspired songwriting, peerless three-part harmonies and brilliant musicianship for over three decades. The only American band of the original Woodstock era to have a societal impact rivaling that of the Beatles, CSN’s dynamic songwriting has been called “the voice of an entire generation.” In 1969, the songwriting trio released their stunning debut album, Crosby, Stills & Nash. Along with “Helplessly Hoping,” Nash’s “Marrakesh Express,” Stills’ “Suite: Judy Blue Eyes,” and Crosby’s “Guinnevere,” the album went straight to number one on the charts. In 1977 the trio released CSN. The disc’s “Just A Song Before I Go” became their first multi-platinum single, and their highest-charting track, reaching #7 on Billboard’s Hot 100. The follow-up, 1982’s Daylight Again, added two more hits to the CSN songbook, Stills’ “Southern Cross” and Nash’s “Wasted On The Way.” CSN’s seminal contribution to the evolution of contemporary American music was honored in 1997 with the group’s induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. CSN continues to garner major awards, including being honored in 2006 with BMI’s prestigious Pop Icons designation. Their popularity, like their music, has endured to this day, even as Crosby, Stills and Nash have simultaneously maintained successful solo careers.

Neil Young, Stephen Stills and Richie Furay on Buffalo Springfield's Dewey Martin
2009 | February 8 | latimes.com

Rock and Roll Hall of Fame members Stephen Stills, Neil Young and Richie Furay have issued a statement on their former Buffalo Springfield band mate Dewey Martin, the group's drummer, who died last week at age 68 at his home in Van Nuys.

"Dewey wasn't intimidated by any of us; he was the older guy in the group and helped glue the band together," said the statement issued Sunday and signed by all three musicians. "He had that strength. The rest of us were all still babies, and just starting out in a band. We had a lot to figure out. But Dewey had been around, playing on sessions and working with a lot of great singers. Plus he was one hell of a drummer."

Dewey Martin dies at 68 - drummer for Buffalo Springfield
2009 | February 6 | latimes.com

Dewey Martin, drummer for the short-lived but long-resonating rock band Buffalo Springfield whose career after the group split never ignited like those of his former band mates Neil Young and Stephen Stills, has died. He was 68.

He was found dead Sunday by a roommate in his Van Nuys apartment, longtime friend Lisa Lenes said Thursday. The cause of death has not been determined. "We believe it was natural causes," Lenes said, adding that he had suffered health problems in recent years and performed publicly only sporadically.

Dewey MartinMartin was one of the founding members, along with Young, Stills, singer-songwriter-guitarist Richie Furay and bassist Bruce Palmer, of Buffalo Springfield, a key progenitor of country-rock music. The group existed for just two years and recorded only three studio albums before disbanding amid rising tensions and musical ambitions of the band's talented but explosive leaders.

In his autobiography "Shakey," Young praised Martin's musical sensitivity. "You get harder, he hits harder. You pull back, he hits back. He can feel the music -- you don't have to tell him."

Martin played on Buffalo Springfield songs including "For What It's Worth," "Mr. Soul," "Rock 'N' Roll Woman" and "Broken Arrow." He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a member of the group in 1997.

Among the highlights is Nash’s solo acoustic demo of “Right Between The Eyes.” Recorded during the Déjà Vu session, a live version of the track popped up in 1971 on a CSN&Y live album. The compilation contains six unreleased tracks, including “Water From The Moon,” “Try To Find Me” and “In Your Name,” a song he recorded in 2007.

Classic Rock Corner: Graham Nash Interviewed
2009 | February 4| houstonpress.com

There isn't much mystery to Graham Nash.

Not that that's a bad thing at all. In fact, if you want to know how the British expat with the distinctive tenor vocals feels about anything - political and social issues, fellow musicians, his wife and children even religion - it's all right there in his songs. And in straightforward language.
nash reflections.jpg

Beginning with the Hollies and continuing through the revolving-door lineups of Crosby, Stills & Nash...and Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young...and Crosby & Nash...as well as his own solo records, Nash has been nothing if not a prolific troubadour. And though he tends to get the least amount of publicity in CSNY, most of the group's biggest hits flowed from his pen: "Marrakesh Express," "Our House," "Teach Your Children," "Just a Song Before I Go" and "Wasted on the Way."

Now the Rock and Roll Hall of Famer finally gets the box-set treatment with Reflections (Rhino). Featuring 64 tracks on three CDs covering more than 40 years with extensive liner notes and rare photos, it's all bundled up in a cool faux worn leather book packaging. Reflections was released Tuesday, one day after Nash's 67th birthday. Monday night, he took part in a historic concert at the Surf Ballroom to mark the 50th anniversary of the "The Day the Music Died" plane crash that took the lives of Buddy Holly (Nash's musical hero), Ritchie Valens and the Big Bopper.

Rocks Off recently spoke with the eloquent Nash about a wide variety of topics including the box set, the current political landscape and one very memorable show in Houston.

Crosby, Stills & Nash Ready To Hit The Studio
2009 | February 2 | billboard.com

With his "Reflections" box set coming tomorrow (Feb. 3), Graham Nash is looking ahead to mining the past on a number of other projects -- including a new Crosby, Stills & Nash covers album the trio is making with producer Rick Rubin.

"I just had David and Stephen at my house in Hawaii for 10 days, and I've heard glimpses of some really great stuff," Nash reports to Billboard.com. But he doesn't want to reveal the songs they're working on "until we've sat down in front of Rick and played him all the stuff we have for the record."

That will happen in mid-February, after Nash performs tonight at a show to commemorate the 50th anniversary of Buddy Holly's last concert at the Surf Ballroom in Clear Lake, Iowa. "We'll go see Rick Rubin and play it all for him. If he thinks we're ready, we'll probably go into the studio within a week and get to work," he says.

Nash says CSN also plans to tour this year to commemorate the 40th anniversary of their first album. He's also starting work on a Stills box set, which he predicts "will be more than three discs" like "Reflections" and Crosby's "Voyage" in 2006, which Nash co-produced.

"Stephen's box set is going to be much more difficult to put together because of the volume of music," Nash notes. "He was a recording fool. He would stay in (the studio) for days and record lots and lots of things." That includes a tape of Stills jamming with Jimi Hendrix, which Nash says "we're going to listen to, and I'll get with Stephen and figure out if there's enough to make a separate disc."

Concurrently, Nash is working on a Crosby Nash live disc from acoustic shows in 1993, and a benefit album for the Children's Defense Fund comprised of hit songs for which he and Crosby sang back-up.

As for "Reflections" -- which features four unreleased songs and a wealth of unreleased mixes amidst its 64 tracks -- Nash says the project "was a little difficult for me, because I pride myself on not looking back and ... being much more interested in the song we're writing now and the show I'm gonna do in a week. But I was forced to look back at my musical life, and it was very interesting. Seeing all that stuff and what I wrote about emotions and love and tears and laughter and anger, it was quite a journey. I came away with the feeling that I might be worth a sh*t."

10 Questions with Graham Nash
2009 | February 2 | huffingtonpost.com

After nearly 50 years of making music, what's the same and what's different?
What's the same is that I'm still writing from my heart, and I'm still my best critic. I don't waste time with a bad song. What's different is that I realize that I have a path. All of these songs are part of a very distinct path I'm on. I also use my energy better now. I remember practicing my autograph when I was 13 years old. To think back on that time and realize how far I've traveled... I've been so lucky, I just want to keep creating.
You're British born but have a distinctly American take on this country. Crosby, Stills & Nash in many ways has defined the very sound of modern American folk music. Do you consider yourself more British or American?
Well, I became an American citizen in the '80s for that very reason. I didn't want to be writing about the country as an outsider. Still, I've always seen myself as a member of planet.
You've said you have difficulty collaborating when writing. Why is it hard to write with someone but so easy to sing with others?
There's just more heart involved in writing than singing. My voice is just a tool to get the song across, but writing it is such personal space.

Holly's legacy beats on
2009 | January 23 | desmoinesregister.com

Fifty years ago, Graham Nash stood on a street corner in his hometown of Salford, England, with his best friend, Alan Clarke, and wept.

The source of their sadness was news from 4,000 miles away and across the Atlantic Ocean - a frozen field north of Clear Lake, where the airplane carrying Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens and J.P. "the Big Bopper" Richardson crashed on Feb. 3, 1959, killing the three rock stars from the Winter Dance Party tour as well as their local pilot, Roger Peterson.

"It was very traumatic for me," said Nash, who was only 17 years old that day. He went on to form the Hollies with Clarke in 1962. They found themselves among a rising tide of '60s rock musicians on both sides of the pond who owed a huge musical debt to the innovations of the Winter Dance Party artists.

Today it might be tempting to sum up the musical legacies of Holly, Valens and the Bopper in terms of Don McLean's landmark 1971 tune "American Pie" (that forever dubbed the tragedy the Day the Music Died), the biopics (1978's "The Buddy Holly Story" and 1987's "La Bamba") and the annual "oldies" rock tribute concerts at the Surf Ballroom in Clear Lake, site of the trio's final performance on Feb. 2, 1959.

But today's musicians still continually claim Holly as a primary songwriting influence; celebrated indie singer-songwriter M. Ward, for instance, releases a new album Feb. 17 that includes a cover of Holly's "Not Fade Away." And younger music fans are discovering classic rock in greater numbers as the songs flow freely from iTunes and other online, digital sources.

Valens is revered for his guitar technique and as the prototypical Latino rocker who anticipated the careers of everybody from Santana to Los Lobos and Los Lonely Boys.

The Bopper wrote country music hits for other artists and is credited with creating the first distinct music video.

"They are all different but of the same era - pioneers, artists that really did catch the ear of the world, not just America," said Terry Stewart, president of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland. The Bopper has yet to join Holly and Valens as an official Rock Hall inductee, but the museum is co-producing a series of events Wednesday, Feb. 2 at the Surf to commemorate the enduring influence of all three artists.

....A decade after the death of his hero, Graham Nash found wider fame and became an emblem of the Woodstock generation with Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young. On Feb. 2 he will finally make his first pilgrimage to the Surf and Clear Lake when he headlines the capstone concert of the commemorative "50 Winters Later" events there. The star-studded musical lineup includes the Crickets, Los Lobos and a house band featuring key Rolling Stones sidemen (Chuck Leavell, Bobby Keys).

“To be invited to go and play on the 50th anniversary, I just couldn’t refuse,” said Nash, who also will mark his 67th birthday on Feb. 2.

Neil Young still has the fire within him
2009 | January 22 | news.com.au

NEIL Young is one of the few survivors of '60s rock still making waves with his new work. And he does it at a rate that leaves younger music-makers standing.

In this decade alone there have been six albums of new material. Make that seven when the freshly recorded Fork in the Road is released this year.

Not to mention the three live-album releases from the vaults in the Performance series, the tours with long-time band Crazy Horse and now with his current touring band, plus his old sparring partners David Crosby, Stephen Stills and Graham Nash.

And the countless hours of work on the Archives collection of rare studio material. That project has assumed mythical status among fans who have been waiting for its rumoured release for what seems like an eternity.

Hold on, says Young, 63, it's coming.

Here's the really Young bit: but maybe not just yet.

Young's much-anticipated 'Archives' pushed back, but new disc out March 31
2009 | January 21 | canadianpress

TORONTO — The wait continues for Neil Young fans.

Young's oft-delayed "The Archives Vol. 1 1963-1972" box set has been pushed back again until later this year with no firm date for its release, according to a representative from Warner Music Canada.

The collection, originally scheduled for release last fall, is expected to include unreleased studio and live recordings, fresh film footage, photos, personal letters and a 150-page book.

Some reports have indicated that the set will use the Blu-Ray format, but the Warner rep said details have not been finalized.

In the meantime, Young's new disc, "Fork in the Road," is scheduled for release March 31, with the title track already available for download on his website.

Early press about the record, however, has not been positive.

In a review of a Madison Square Garden performance by Young last month, the Village Voice called his new material "absolutely terrible."

The songs, which writer Rob Harvilla said seemed culled from a concept album about eco-friendly cars, were "disturbingly beef-witted" and the crowd reaction was emphatic: Harvilla reported that only 60 per cent of the original audience remained by the end of the show.

Young's interest in eco-friendly cars is well-established.

Last year, the legendary Canadian rocker teamed up with mechanic Johnathan Goodwin, in the hopes of converting Young's 1959 Lincoln Continental to operate on an electric battery.

Young is nominated for a Grammy Award for best solo rock vocal performance for his song "No Hidden Path," off last year's "Chrome Dreams II." The awards will be handed out Feb. 8 in Los Angeles.

Neil Young fills lead guitar slot on Booker T's new Potato Hole album
2009 | January 10 | uncut.co.uk

Booker T. Jones' Stax/Volt resume reads like a field guide to American music, but for his Anti- debut and first solo set since the '80s, the 64-year-old soul man went with a different kind of Southern sound altogether, enlisting Georgia rockers the Drive-By Truckers as his backing band for an album of all-new instrumentals.

Potato Hole is due April 21. Neil Young, who Booker T. and the MGs backed on 2002's Are You Passionate? handles lead guitar duties, and the 10-song set includes covers of "Hey Ya," Tom Waits' "Get Behind the Mule" and the Drive-By Truckers' "Space City."

"It was a matter of finding people to help me interpret these ideas," Jones tells Billboard. "In the public's mind, it's gonna be a new sound for me. In my mind it's not. I've loved rock for a long time. In the '60s I wrote a few songs for Otis Redding and Eddie Floyd that were rock songs, but it was too soon for us to be doing that kind of music."

Neil Young fans upset that he is releasing a new album
2009 | January 16 | guardian.co.uk

Neil Young has announced the release of a new album, and no one could be more distressed than his fans.

For months now, Young obsessives have been awaiting the release of Archives Volume 1 – a vast library of early recordings, in the form of 10 Blu-ray discs. This week, however, reports have emerged that an album of new Neil Young material – called Fork In the Road – will pre-empt Archives, pushing its February release back into spring.

Often, this would call for celebration. Who needs old material when you are being offered shiny, new songs by a music legend? Alas, that's not what Neil Young's fans seem to be thinking. They have heard these new songs – on Young's recent tour, or in a new viral video – and let's just say they don't like them very much.

"Would a record company actually listen to this garbage and then agree to release it?" asked one fan at the popular Thrasher's Wheat site. "At some point, they're going to have to take a stand – right? I'm actually rooting for the record company here."

With Fork In the Road, Young seems to be exploring three things – dirty blues, direct lyrics, and his LincVolt electric car project. That all sounds well and good until you hear the opening lyrics of the title track.

"Got a pot belly," Young sings, "It's not too big / Gets in my way / When I'm driving my rig."

The video – clearly a webcam recording of Old Shakey chomping on an apple, mouthing along, cotton buds in his ears – doesn't inspire much confidence. A few minutes in, he sings about blogging. Later in the video he plays air guitar as a flat-screen TV seems to be repossessed. Commentary on the financial crisis? Maybe. Revelatory rock music? Says a fan of his for the past 20 years: "This new stuff is simply the most tired music I've ever heard from Neil."

4WaySite comment: Makes you wonder if there's another lawsuit alleging Neil's guilty of "recording uncharacteristic music with no chance of commercial success..." His 40+ years in the industry has never been "the same thing" over and over again. If someone doesn't care for this "version" of Neil Young, just wait—there will be a new incarnation along soon.

Neil Young Debuts Hilarious Clip for New “Fork in the Road”
2009 | January 13 | rollingstone.com

Neil Young was frantically writing songs about the economic meltdown and his LincVolt project during his 2008 world tour, playing as many as ten per show by the time the trek wrapped last month. Just a few days ago he posted another new one on YouTube and his website with virtually no fanfare. Wearing a blue “Tube Amp Repair” t-shirt and eating an apple (with headphones plugged into it), Young sings about the economic collapse against a basic blues beat. “I’m a big rock star,” Donald Trump’s favorite rocker sings in the hysterical single camera video. “My sales have tanked, but I still got you. Thanks. Download this, it sounds like shit.”

Near the end he plays some mean air guitar while a flat screen TV is repossessed in the background. A spokesman for Young confirms the song is the title track to a forthcoming studio album. What does that mean for the perpetually delayed Archives box set that was due out in March, and the Crazy Horse album Toast? “It seem logical in light of the timeliness of the subject matter that it will preempt Archives and Toast for the time being,” the spokesperson says. “But that hasn’t been confirmed yet.” With Neil Young, very few things ever are.

CSN working on a new album of covers
2009 | January 10 | uncut.co.uk

David Crosby has confirmed to uncut.co.uk that Crosby, Stills and Nash are currently working on a new album with veteran rock producer Rick Rubin.

Speaking to Uncut, David Crosby says Rubin plans to get CSN to record some cover versions, possibly including tracks by the Beatles, The Beach Boys and the Rolling Stones.

Crosby says: "One of the interesting things was that they said they’d like to hear us do other people’s songs that we wish we’d written. They said: “There’s Joni, James [Taylor], The Beatles: contemporaries of yours who we know you admire. We’d like you to pick a bunch of songs.” So we’ve been going through that process with Rick, and he’s pretty smart about songs. One of the things that made us want to work with him was the music he’d done with Johnny Cash. He knew he wasn’t going to make money off of the Cash albums. And he spent a lot of his time trying to make those albums happen, so I can only conclude that he loves music.

"So come January, we’re going to pick and learn some songs. I can’t say which ones are going to make the final list, but we have about thirty. There’s all the people you might expect: some Jackson Browne, certainly several Beatles tunes, The Beach Boys, Joni, James, the Stones. There’s a whole shitload of records that we love and think are brilliant. I don’t know how Rick works yet, but I certainly know how we work, so I’m presuming there’ll be some pretty harmonies."

Perfect Storm for Innovation Gathers in Washington—blog post by Neil Young
2009 | January 4 | huffingtonpost.com

A Perfect storm for innovation is gathering in Washington. With the government's recent financial assistance to GM and Chrysler, the Big 3 now have until the end of March to make the case that shows how they will survive. Survival is not enough though.

America now has a chance to lead the world in power and fuel efficiency. The Big three will still be looking for help at the end of March. As the major shareholder, the US government would have an opportunity to DEMAND the type of cars that will lead the world toward saving the planet for future generations.

If the Big three cannot agree to make only cars that are fuel efficient enough to get at least 50 MPG by 2011, 75 MPG by 2013 and 100 MPG by 2015, then they should go into bankruptcy and fend for themselves like all the other businesses that are having trouble. The truth is this can be done and innovators know the way to do it.

Stephen Stills' birthday
2009 | January 3 | 4waysite.com

Congratulations on your birthday Stephen, and.... Carry On!

Stephen Stills was born in Dallas, Texas on January 3, 1945 to a military family. Moving around as a child, he developed an interest in blues and folk music. He was also influenced by Latin music after spending his youth in Gainesville and Tampa, Florida, Costa Rica and the Panama Canal Zone, where he graduated from high school.

Stills dropped out of the University of Florida to pursue a music career in the early 1960s and the rest is history...

In honor of Stephen's birthday, AllAboutJazz.com posted a nice appreciation article with links to many history making videos. Including Stephen performing “4 + 20" on the Dick Cavett show the day after Woodstock.
